Breed Rescue: Our Commitment to the Icelandic Sheepdog
The Icelandic Sheepdog Association of America (ISAA) is dedicated to promoting and safeguarding the well-being of the Icelandic Sheepdog throughout the United States. As the official AKC Parent Club, we strive to serve the breed's best interests by raising public awareness, creating a comprehensive resource network, and advocating for proper husbandry and responsible breeding practices. Our commitment to these dogs extends through every stage of their lives, which is why we proudly support and collaborate with specialized rescue efforts dedicated to this rare and ancient breed.
The National Icelandic Sheepdog Rescue Alliance (NISRA)
Founded in 2009, the National Icelandic Sheepdog Rescue Alliance (NISRA) is a volunteer-led, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. It is the only specialized rescue in the United States dedicated exclusively to Icelandic Sheepdogs. While the ISAA emphasizes the breed's standards and community, NISRA provides the essential safety net to ensure that every "Icie" in need finds a pathway to a safe, permanent home.
What NISRA Does
NISRA's mission is a dedicated effort to preserve the breed's legacy through:
Owner-Assisted Rehoming: Most of NISRA's efforts focus on working directly with owners who, due to changing life circumstances, can no longer keep their Icelandic Sheepdog. We provide a compassionate, non-judgmental process to facilitate a responsible transition, ensuring the dog moves directly into a vetted, breed-savvy home.
Rescue & Rehoming: Identifying Icelandic Sheepdogs in shelters or vulnerable situations and providing them with the specialized care needed to find their "forever homes."
Rehabilitation: Providing essential medical care and behavioral support to ensure each dog is healthy and prepared for a successful adoption.
Foster Care & Transport: Supporting a nationwide network of volunteers to provide temporary homes for dogs in transition and ensure safe passage for "Icies" traveling across the country.
Community Education: Acts as a helpful resource for the public, offering advice on the breed's specific needs and providing resources to support owners in maintaining their bond and keeping their dogs at home whenever possible.
How You Can Help Support the Mission
As a non-profit organization, NISRA depends entirely on the passion and generosity of the Icelandic Sheepdog community. There are several ways you can help protect these wonderful and unique dogs.
Adopt: Welcome a dog in need of a second chance into your heart and home.
Foster: Create a safe environment where a rescued dog can relax while waiting for their forever family.
Volunteer: Join our fantastic volunteer network by assisting with transportation or supporting NISRA's programs and initiatives.
Donate: Your financial contributions directly fund veterinary care, boarding, and transport for rescued dogs.
